Officer James Grogan - A Man Remembered

Jimmy Grogan

Officer James M. "Jimmy"Grogan
Brookline Police Department (retired)
October 6, 2016

Officer James "Jimmy" Grogan passed away on October 6, 2016. I remember Jimmy as someone full of laughter, a boisterous man, a little rough around the edges.  But he was also a very kind man and someone everyone relied upon.  He was one of those "old timers", as we affectionately called them.

In late 2002, Jimmy approached me and told me about a conversation he had with a Boston police officer, Pamela Besold, who talked about the idea of starting a women's law enforcement association.  He told me when he heard this he immediately thought of me and gave me her phone number.  I called Pam and we made arrangements to meet on one of our midnight shifts in a parking lot on the Brighton/Brookline border.  That meeting was the beginning of the "Women in Blue", a group of Boston and Brookline women sharing the same vision of an association.

A few short months later, we discovered that there was another group of women in the Massachusetts State Police who were talking about the same idea.  It was not long before these two groups merged and became the "Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement".

Jimmy was the "spark" that caused Pam and I to meet, and as they say, the rest is history.

Thank you Jimmy.  May you be at peace.

June Murphy
Brookline Police Department
