MAWLE is excited to once again offer the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship to a high school senior pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice.
The scholarship was established in 2015 by then-MAWLE President June T. Murphy.
Lt. Murphy joined the Brookline Police Department in 1984, following in the footsteps of her late father Sgt. William R. Murphy.
The winner will be chosen by the Scholarship Committee and submitted for review to the MAWLE Executive Board. The winner and their family will be invited to the annual Spirit of MAWLE Award Ceremony to receive the scholarship. The scholarship check – in the amount of $1,000 – will be delivered after the completion of the first semester of college.
The deadline to apply is Friday, April 11, at 5 p.m. Applications can be submitted here.
About the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship
In 2000, Lt. Murphy was appointed as the first female Sergeant in Brookline, and later the first female Lieutenant in 2003.
Lt. Murphy was a driving force and charter member in creating MAWLE to help other women succeed in law enforcement careers. Her passion for education and desire to help young women start a career in law enforcement/criminal justice motivated her to organize the MAWLE Scholarship for women.
In May 2017, Lt. Murphy passed away at the age of 60. To honor her memory and continue her passion for aiding young women in the pursuit of a successful career in law enforcement/criminal justice, the scholarship was renamed the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship.
Since 2018, the scholarship has been awarded annually at the spring Spirit of MAWLE Awards Ceremony to a candidate who is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement/criminal justice and best represents Lt. Murphy’s values and interests, which included hard work, integrity and academic scholarship.
