Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship

About the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship

In 2000, Lt. Murphy was appointed as the first female Sergeant in Brookline, and later the first female Lieutenant in 2003.

Lt. Murphy was a driving force and charter member in creating MAWLE to help other women succeed in law enforcement careers. Her passion for education and desire to help young women start a career in law enforcement/criminal justice motivated her to organize the MAWLE Scholarship for women.

In May 2017, Lt. Murphy passed away at the age of 60. To honor her memory and continue her passion for aiding young women in the pursuit of a successful career in law enforcement/criminal justice, the scholarship was renamed the Lieutenant June T. Murphy Scholarship.

Since 2018, the scholarship has been awarded annually at the spring Spirit of MAWLE Awards Ceremony to a candidate who is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement/criminal justice and best represents Lt. Murphy’s values and interests, which included hard work, integrity and academic scholarship.

All eligible candidates’ qualifications, achievements, etc. will be evaluated and rated in comparison to all the perspective applicants.  The winner will be selected and awarded the scholarship by late spring.

To be eligible, applicants MUST review the guidelines and criteria, complete the online application, and use the checklist for your guidance.  If all the guidelines and criteria are not met you are not eligible to apply.

The scholarship winner will be chosen by the Scholarship Committee and submitted for review to the MAWLE Executive Board.  The winner and family will be invited to the annual Spirit of MAWLE Award Ceremony for the presentation of the scholarship. The scholarship check will be delivered after the completion of the first semester of college.

On behalf of the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement, we encourage you, or someone you know to apply.
